Subject: Security Alert: Strike by taxi and bus operators and associated violence (Jamaica 14 November, 2022)

Event: The union representing private taxi and bus operators has announced a strike effective 9:00 AM on November 14, 2022. Media and Embassy personnel reports indicate that taxi and bus operators and their supporters in several communities are taking extreme efforts to prevent drivers from picking up paying passengers. Instances of violence and threats have been reported against commercial drivers and their passengers.
As a regular practice U.S. Embassy Kingston personnel are prohibited from travel on public transportation due to concerns regarding security and vehicle safety. Due to the ongoing strike-related violence, all U.S. citizens are advised to avoid using taxis, route taxis, micro-buses, or municipal buses.
Actions to take:
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Avoid travel on public transportation.
- Avoid crowds and demonstrations, especially near transportation hubs.
