U.S. Embassy Kingston hosts Pre-Departure Orientation for Jamaican students

On Friday, July 21, 2017, EducationUSA Jamaica hosted a Pre-Departure Orientation at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel, for approximately twenty prospective undergraduate and graduate students, who will commence studies at higher education institutions in the U.S. this Fall. These students will attend several prestigious American schools including Caldwell University, New York Film Academy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of South Florida, Seton Hall University, Lafayette College, and Howard University.

The U.S. Embassy’s Chargé d’ Affaires Eric Khant, encouraged the students to capitalize on this wonderful cultural exchange between Jamaica and the United States. “This is a window of opportunity which will change your life,” he said.

Other presenters included EducationUSA Adviser, Dr. Jody- Ann Jones, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Country Attaché, Dextan Dixon U.S. Embassy Kingston’s Consular Officer, Salman Haji and Fulbright Scholar, Wayne Thorpe.

The presenters led the audience through a discussion on how to prepare for departure, what to do once they arrive on campus, maintaining their student visa status, and adjusting to cultural and lifestyle changes.

In closing, U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Officer, Sri Kulkarni shared his study abroad experiences with the students.
