U.S. Embassy Kingston resumes Authorization Process For Firearm Export Licenses

The State Department, in consultation with the U.S. Embassy Kingston, has resumed the authorization process for firearm export licenses, considering each case on its merits. Exports bound for Jamaican security forces have not been delayed at any point.

The U.S. Embassy is working with the Ministry of National Security and the Firearm Licensing Authority to identify opportunities to jointly improve the firearm licensing and registration process. Steps that can be taken immediately include prioritizing the destruction of confiscated weapons, resuming marking of imported firearms, increasing coordination with the Jamaica Constabulary Force, ensuring up-to-date ballistics data is available to the Forensic Science Laboratory, increasing frequency of ballistics data collection, and improving accuracy of record-keeping.

We look forward to continued close collaboration with the FLA and to jointly reassessing these issues in six months.
