U.S. Embassy Kingston Supports PAJ National Journalism Week 2017

In partnership with the Press Association of Jamaica, (PAJ), the U.S. Embassy, Kingston provided support for a three-day media exchange with American invited speaker, Dr. Janet Steele, associate professor of journalism at the George Washington University. Under the theme, Media Regulations in Jamaica and elsewhere, looking at the topic, “Who is Watching the Watchdog”. Dr. Steele was the main presenter to multiple audiences comprising journalists, bloggers, civil society and journalism students from the country’s three main institutions of learning, University of the West Indies Western Campus, University of Technology and Northern Caribbean University.

The three-day exchange commenced with a public forum in Kingston, with an audience size of over 200, also including online viewers via live stream on Facebook. In his remarks, U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Officer, Jeremiah Knight commended the PAJ team on the work they do. “Our hope is for the forum and all the other PAJ led engagements be a catalyst to this important conversation leading to best practices that will further strengthen the local media corps”.
