Kingston – Today, the U.S. Department of State issued a global level 4 health advisory. This advisory encourages U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19. In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. U.S. citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel. Many countries are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and implementing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, closing borders, and prohibiting non-citizens from entry with little advance notice. For Americans visiting or residing in Jamaica, the U.S. Embassy strongly encourages them to visit our website and social media platforms for up-to-date information regarding international travel.
This recent global health advisory follows the Level 3 advisory issued on March 14, where the Department of State authorized the departure of U.S. personnel and family members from any diplomatic or consular post in the world who determined that they were at higher risk if exposed to COVID-19 or who have requested departure based on a commensurate justification.
United States Ambassador Donald Tapia said “the US Government is exploring all options to address the current travel disruptions. We strongly encourage you to continue working with your airline or travel arranger.” The Ambassador also stated “that as the global community continues its fight against the spread of COVID-19, I strongly urge American citizens in Jamaica to adhere to the travel advisory issued. I am also encouraged by the progressive steps the government of Jamaica has taken to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 within its borders.”
For the latest information regarding COVID-19, the embassy encourages Americans in Jamaica to please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website. In addition, those who suspect that they have had exposure to COVID-19 and are displaying symptoms to self-isolate immediately and contact the Ministry of Health & Wellness at 888-ONE-LOVE (663-5683) or 888-754-7792 for further instructions.
